Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has launched an investigation into the untimely death of a young inmate at Bvumbwe Rehabilitation Centre in Thyolo.

A preliminary fact-finding mission by the Commission confirmed the tragic loss of life, with the deceased’s body currently held at Thyolo District Hospital for further procedures.

MHRC calls on stakeholders, including the Malawi Prison Service and the Malawi Police Service, to cooperate with the investigation as per section 15 of the Human Rights Commission Act.

The incident is believed to have occurred on or around November 5, 2023.
