The High Court in Lilongwe has called for an interparty hearing in a case where three senior Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members want the court to declare that former President Peter Mutharika is not eligible to contest as a presidential candidate for the DPP.

The three are Fredrick Billy Malata, Ken Chitatata Msonda and Thomas Joe Nyirongo.

The senior members are also asking the court to declare that Mutharika is no longer fit to continue as DPP’s president and should therefore cease to perform any duties of the office of the president of DPP.

The trio are also asking for an order that an Interim president be appointed by the Central Committee of DPP or from the members who have shown interest in contesting as DPP presidential candidates.

Lilongwe High Court Judge, Justice Simeon Mdeza, has since set aside 1 December 2023 as a day to have an inter-party hearing.

The hearing will start at 10 am. Recently the High Court ordered DPP to have an elective conference within 90 days so that its internal squabbles are resolved.
