Lilongwe Police Station is keeping in custody 28-year-old Joseph Chisi, on suspicion that he robbed a motorcycle he had hired from Kawondo in Area 36 after attacking its operator in Area 47, on Thursday, October 16, 2023.

It is said that on the said date at around 18:00 hours, the suspect went to Kawondo taxi rank in Area 36, where he hired a motorcycle to go to Area 47 claiming he wanted to pick his wife.

However, to the operator’s surprise soon after reaching the said place, the man turned against the owner, and started assaulting him with intent to rob the motorcycle.

And, few minutes later, two other unknown suspects emerged from nowhere, joined the assault and managed to overpower the owner before trying to speed away with the motorcycle.

Fortunately, before they could cover a distance, the owner who had in his pocket the motorcycle’s remote control device, immediately switched it off rendering the suspects immobile.

While the suspects were still struggling to start on the motorcycle engine for their escape from the scene, a certain car approached with lights on.

When the vehicle’s driver heard the victim’s shouts for help, he stopped and together with the victim they chased after the suspects and apprehended Chisi, whilst his two accomplices escaped leaving the motorcycle behind.

Chisi (suspect), who was later assaulted by passersby, was taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital where he was treated as an outpatient.

He comes from Chanthonya Village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District.
