Agriculture Minister Sam Kawale announces that the government will miss President Chakwera’s 40-day deadline for completing the Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP).

Kawale attributes the delay to supply chain challenges beyond the ministry’s control, citing forex shortages by the Reserve Bank of Malawi and the recent 44 percent devaluation of the Kwacha.

Originally planning to distribute 3 million bags of fertilizer in this year’s AIP, only 1,160,829 bags, representing just over 30 percent, have been distributed so far.

The 40-day period set by President Chakwera concludes on November 30.
