Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has suspended some employees for leading and staging a sit-in for staff members.

The company’s employees in Blantyre on Thursday went on strike, demanding a pay increase.

Notably are Staff Union President Charity Harawa, Secretary General William Mnyamula, Vice President Alex Harawa and others.

A suspension letter to Mnyamula, which we have seen, accuses him of leading the “illegal” sit-in and march for the staff.

“Your actions were in contrast to provisions of the law as enshrined in the Labour Relations Act which stipulates the right procedure for such actions,” reads part of the letter signed by Chief executive Officer Kamkwamba Kumwenda.

Mnyamula has confirmed receiving the letter.

Reports indicate that about 24 workers, most of whom are drivers, have been suspended.

The Escom Public Relations office is yet to comment on the issue.
