The Mangochi Senior Resident Magistrate Court has denied bail to well-known human right activist Bon Kalindo, popularly known as Winiko.
Kalindo is accused of inciting violence during the November 30, 2023 demonstrations against the devaluation of the kwacha in Mangochi and was arrested on Friday last week in Zomba.
Deliver his ruling Senior Resident Magistrate Muhammad Maxwell Chande in his ruling ordered that Kalindo be remanded and that hearing of the case begin on Friday this week.
Lawyer for Kalindo, Smart Khalifa, asked the court to release Kalindo on the basis that he will comply with all bail conditions, just like he is doing with similar cases.
But State Prosecutor Loyd Kachotsa argued against the defense’s bail application, saying Kalindo might interfere with witnesses once released on bail.
Meanwhile, Kalindo has pleaded not guilty to the new charges.
