Power outages and food shortages at Mulunguzi Secondary School in Zomba are disrupting exams, forcing an early closure.
Head teacher Silk Kadwala confirmed the situation, stating that the lack of electricity for the past four days resulted from non-payment to Electrical Cooperation of Malawi (Escom).
Kadwala attributed the financial challenges to the government’s inability to provide funds for other school activities.
“The money we receive from the government helps us to buy other things such as buying food staffs, paying for electricity and water, so we are taking the money that students pay as school fees, but it’s not enough,” Said Kadwala.
The money previously used, derived from student fees, has now run out.
With exams being rushed, students are expected to leave the school by Friday due to the worsening circumstances.
