The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) and the Tourism Association of Mount Mulanje (TAMM) have called for the immediate withdrawal of mining activities on Mulanje Mountain by Akatswiri Mineral Resources.
CDEDI Executive Director Silvester Namiwa, speaking on Tuesday during a press briefing in Mulanje, said the company secured the mining license dubiously.
On his part, TAMM Chairperson Willard Mahata says the mining activity, if not stopped, will kill the tourism industry in the mountains and the district.
Meanwhile, the two organizations have asked the District Commissioner for Mulanje to call for a stakeholder consultative meeting by Thursday, December 21, 2023.
