One of the football power houses in Machinji, Amagetto Football Club has been crowned as champions of Alex Chimwala Christmas League after thrashing Hungry Lions by a goal to nil in an entertaining match played at Nkolokoti Ground on Sunday.

The match which delayed for about an hour due to heavy rains, attracted huge crowd of spectators especially football lovers around Machinjiri Township.

The match also saw the presence of the sponsor Alex Chimwala, member of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) who is also aspiring to contest as Member of Parliament for Blantyre City South Lunzu Constituency.

From the first whistle both teams displayed classic football by attacking each other from all angles and no wonder the first half ended goalless.

Come second half, Amagetto FC took control of the proceedings as the team put up an extra gear and no wonder the team scored in the 78 minute through a header.

Hungry Lions tried everything possible to level parities and take the match into penalties but Amagetto fc proved too strong for them.

At the end of 90 minutes, the game ended 1-0 in favour of Amgetto Fc.

Speaking after the match Amagetto FC head coach Aubstar Mkangala, popularly known Ghetto G hailed his boys for putting up a gallant fight.

He also hailed Chimwala for coming up with the Christmas league in the area.

“To be frankly with you this league is beneficial to us as youths of this Township because it kept us busy and I salute Chimwala for that. Many of us youths are jobless and this is the only activity that is making us busy without indulging ourselves in immoral behavours,” said Mkangala.

On his part Chimwala promised to continue sponsoring football and other development activities in Machinjiri Township.

“I was born and raised here in Machinjiri Town and the only way to give back the little I have for the people of Machinjiri is by sponsoring Netball and Football activities in the area.

“Let me also take this opportunity to urge the youths in this area to unite and push for the construction of the youth centre,” said Chimwala.

As champions Amagetto FC went away with money amounting MK150,000 while runners up Hungry Lions went away with MK100,000.00.

In netball, Snippers emerged champions after outclassing Super Queens by 28 baskets to 7 baskets and went away with MK100,000.00.

Super Queens went away with Mk80,000.00 for emerging as runners up.
