Police in Mangochi have arrested eight people for suspecting them that they allegedly destroyed Koche Roadblock Shelter and a motor vehicle’s rear windscreen and lens, all items worth K745,000 in the district.
Spokesperson for Mangochi Police Amina Tepan Daudi has confimerd the development and said that on December 23 2023, Madalitso George was driving a Mark X saloon registration BUDY G1 from the direction of Makawa heading Mangochi boma.
She said due to overspeeding, he hit a pedal cyclist at Maldeco Trading Centre who was crossing from the left to the right side of the road.
“The cyclist sustained painful chest and minor bruises on the right elbow.
“Due to hostility at the scene, the driver cruised away to the nearby Koche Roadblock. The suspects run after the car and found the driver reporting the matter to police.
“These suspects started pelting stones on the motor vehicle, resultantly, the rear windscreen and both lens were smashed.
Sensing danger the driver fled with the motor vehicle and proceeded to report the issue at Mangochi Police Station,” said Daudi.
She said the suspects thought that Police had deliberately allowed the driver to run away.
“They vandalised the shelter and looted the barriers before running away,” she added that.
The eight are are expected to appear before court soon to answer charges of malicious damage contrary to section 344(a).
