Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda has said Malawi has already recorded about 47 cholera cases with two deaths since the start of the 2023-24 rainy season.
The sentiment has been made during the  press  held in Lilongwe, says this raises fears of another outbreak and has since urged Malawians to continue practicing hygiene during the rainy season.
Chiponda added that although health workers are putting much effort to contain the the spread by, among others, distributing chlorine for water treatment, most people do not comply.
She also bemoaned the act of some religious leaders who are reluctant to accept the transmission modes and prevention practices for cholera as presented by the health care workers.
“Most communities do not comply to the advice provided by the health care workers on sanitation.
“People choose not to treat the water with chlorine or even boiling the water before drinking and also do not also eat hygienic food, this can contribute the spread out of cholera,” she said.
Meanwhile, On 7th August 2023, Presidential Taskforce on Coronavirus and Cholera declared that the Cholera outbreak is no longer a national public health emergency in Malawi.
