The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has strongly condemned the continued brutal killings of older people in the country.
The condemnation follows the killing of two older women in Nsanje district on December 26, 2023 over alleged accusations of witchcraft.
This development, the commission said has brought the total number of killings of older people to 25 in 2023 alone.
According to MHRC, it is disheartening to note the continuous killings and assault of older people despite all the efforts to curb the malpractice.
The commission has since asked parliament to expedite the process of enacting the Malawi Older Persons Bill to address the existing stigma and prejudice and for the courts to offer stiffer punishments all convicts of any offense bordering on witchcraft accusations.
The commission has further lured traditional and religious leaders to take a leading role in condemning the act which is barbaric and heinous.
