40-year-old man identified as Faxon Munthali is in Police custody at Chizumulu Police Unit in Likoma District on allegations of theft by public servant.
Likoma Police Station Publicist Enala Kalua told the press that auditors sent to Munthali’s workplace found that he had misappropriated the corporation’s funds.
Police say Munthali was working as a Unit Marketing Officer at Chizumulu Admarc and his contract was terminated following temporary closure of the depot.
In February to December 2023, he was assigned to work on a monthly basis and during this period he had in his custody K9.6 million cash from the sales and he misappropriated a sum of K5.8 million, claiming it was part of his earnings for his 10 years working for the company.
The matter was reported to Likoma Police Station leading to the arrest of Munthali who was charged with theft by public servant and is expected to appear before court after completion of paperwork.
