Police in the eastern region have reported a 9.5 percent increase in criminal offenses in a space of years.

This has been revealed by Mangochi Police’s spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi when she was making her presentation at Liwonde Sun Hotel in Machinga for an annual review conference on crime and traffic management on 7th February 2024.

According to Daudi the region registered 6927 cases in 2023 as compared to 6327 criminal cases in 2022.
The police have also reported a 6 percent decline in road accidents, from 417 in 2022 to 319 in 2023. The report has further noted an increase in homicide, theft, and theft by public servants.
The report has noted that resource constraints continue to hamper efforts by the regional police to execute their duties.
