Mulanje Central Member of Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa has withdrawn a bill seeking to bar any person aged above 80 from contesting for the presidency.
It is said that Nankhumwa withdrew the Bill on the house agenda during the business committee meeting held yesterday presided over by Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara.
Parliament spokesperson Ian Mwenye also confirmed the development in an interview with one of the local daily papers (Nation Publications Limited).
“Yes, I can confirm that it [the age limit Bill] has been withdrawn,” Mwenye was quoted as saying in the local daily papers.
The bill attracted mixed reactions among many Malawians with many claiming that Nankhumwa want to use the Bill to hit back at the former President Peter Mutharika who is seeking a comeback in 2025 polls.
Mutharika fired Nankhumwa together with some 11 senior officials from the Party.
