The police in Mulanje district have arrested one of their colleagues on suspicion of detaining a ten-year-old boy for three days and torturing him, alleging that he was a thief.

The spokesperson for the Southern Region Police, Sub-Inspector Edward Kabango, confirmed that the officer involved are Sub-Inspector Frackson Chigalu from Misanjo Police Station in the same district, and stated he will face disciplinary action.

They claim that due to the manner in which he was detained, the boy sustained injuries to both hands and was taken to Mulanje District Hospital, from where he was referred to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.

Kabango further stated that the boy has since had one hand amputated and is currently receiving treatment for injuries to both hands.
