Parliament has been suspended on the request by members of Parliament (MPs) from the government side led by Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda.
The MPs would like the Speaker to handle the issue regarding Democratic Progressive Party members who are blocking the entrance of the Parliament building in Lilongwe in protest of the Speaker’s stance to to suspend them from proceedings.
Earlier, First Deputy Speaker Madalitso Kazombo ruled that proceedings should proceed while communication on the issue has been sent to the clerk of Parliament so that the Speaker can provide further direction on the matter.
He said: “No we can suspend proceedings, we are using tax payers money.”
This was after several MPs from the government bench made calls to have the deputy speaker suspend the house and ensure the entrance is clear.
It was, however, when Chimwendo Banda rose and called for the adjournment that Kazombo bowed down to the pressure.
