A 13-year-old boy in Mulanje was detained for three days by two police officers, Frackson Chigalu and Charles Mbewe, with both hands tied using a rubber belt.

The boy, James Mbendera, underwent amputation of his right limb and two fingers on his left hand due to injuries sustained during his detention.

The Magistrate’s Court in Mulanje has released the two accused officers on bail, requiring them to pay K250,000 each in cash and provide a surety of K1 million non-cash.

As part of their bail conditions, the officers are obligated to appear before the South East Police Regional headquarters every fortnight on Fridays.

The case has been adjourned to March 6, 2024, for the state to present its witnesses, as directed by First Grade Magistrate George Chimombo.
