Nkhotakota district authorities have confirmed death by drowning of one person at Dwangwa following flash floods which wreaked havoc in the aftermath of four days of heavy rains.

District disaster risk management officer George Zibophe says the situation is still dire due to persistent rainfall over the past 24 hours.

He said the affected population is now over 5 000 and so far over 500 people have been rescued from critical conditions using local efforts, although many are still trapped.

Zibophe further revealed that the Department of Disaster Management Affairs is working with the Malawi Defence Force to boost rescue operations.

Said Zibophe: “Boats are still rescuing people but that is not enough. We are waiting for the water to recede to do thorough assessment and [provide] relief support. The affected population is in need of basics such as food, beddings and shelter.”
