Communities under Sub-Traditional Authority (STA) Tamani in Phalombe have resorted to consuming sorghum-like grain called Mbelewere collected from grass along the Phalombe River owing to raging hunger.
Chairperson for Tamani, Area Development Committee (ADC) Handson Mambulasa, has confirmed that only 573 households out of the 5,159 affected by hunger in the area are receiving food assistance.
One of the affected households, Cecilia Masala, says the hunger situation is dire in the area, urging the government and organisations to bail them out of the predicament.
District Commissioner for Phalombe Douglas Moffat, says the community in question will receive food assistance soon.
