The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi Chapter has expressed shock over the death of freelance journalist Charles Mkula.
Mkula died at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre on Sunday, March 10, 2024 after a long illness.
Until his death Mkula was Secretary General for Journalists Union of Malawi (JUMA) and a freelance journalist managing his consultancy Hyphen Media Institute.
Mkula also worked for the now defunct Enquirer newspaper and was actively involved in the work of JournAids Malawi.
In a statement signed by MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga said the passing of Mkula is a setback to the media industry.
“MISA Malawi consoles the family of Mkula. Charles was dedicated to journalism and as Secretary General for Journalists Union of Malawi he championed the welfare of journalists in many endeavors. Since the news of his passing came out, there has been an outpouring of emotion from colleagues who have shared their experiences on working with and knowing Charles. He mentored many journalists and was a friend to many.
“We will miss Charles, his wisdom, friendship and experience which he so generously shared with colleagues for many years. We hope the critical work he was doing within the journalism circles will continue to honour his spirit,” reads part of the statement.
Mkula was born on October 28, 1967. His burial will take place on Tuesday March 12 2024 at Chipande Village (Naisi Trading Centre) in the Area of Traditional Authority Malemia in Zomba.
