The Lilongwe City Council has in the early hours of 16 March 2024, demolished and reduced to rubble the shops that some businesspersons had erected in the Kabwabwa Cemetery within Area 25.
According to eyewitnesses, the council officers arrived around 1 am, accompanied by heavily armed security.
They added that some individuals capitalized on the chaos, scavenging for anything salvageable from the demolished shops, whose owners hesitated to move their merchandise even after receiving warnings.
This morning, the scene was one of hopeful scavengers, searching for valuable items they could sell amidst the debris.
