The country’s local sugar producers Illovo Sugar Company and Salima Sugar have assured Malawians that Sugar production will resume next month.

This was revealed today during meeting held between the Ministry of Trade and Industry and local sugar companies Illovo sugar Malawi and Salima sugar company.

According to the statement, the ministry and the companies agreed on necessary measures to be implemented in order to stabilize the supply of sugar in the country during this period whilst working on long term measures to ensure sustainable supply of sugar on the domestic markets.

The statement revealed the measures to mitigate any business malpractices in the supply of sugar by the distributors as well as super markets in the country.

The Ministry has said it will continue issuing import licence for sugar until situation normalizes and will introduce regulations under the business licencing Act aimed at regulating distributors of sugar in the country as it will help to protect the consumers against unscrupulous distributors.
