The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has scrapped off a decision to hike the tax on secondhand clothes with immediate effect.

The development comes barely hours after vendors who sale second hand clothes at Tsoka Market in the capital Lilongwe took to the street to protest against the move.

MRA Commissioner General John Biziwick has confirmed of the development in a statement made available to faceofmalawi.

Government had increased the value, for duty purpose, of used clothes from $1.9 to $2.5 per kg in this year’s budget.

Vendors complained that the hike of the tax on secondhand clothes has resulted in many vendors making loses in their business.
