The High Court in Blantyre has dismissed with costs a case in which Leadership with Compassion Party (LCP) had brought before it challenging a decision by the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) which rejected nomination of its candidates in Karonga by-elections.

Mec Lawyer David Matumika said Mec rejected the nomination papers of the three candidates because they found out that their party was not registered.

Among others, the party was praying for an injunction of the by-election scheduled for March 26, 2024.

“The court found no merit in their application. This means we will proceed with the elections next week,” he said.

The by-elections will be held in Kaporo, Chilanga and Rukuru wards which became vacant following conviction of three councillors by Karonga Magistrate’s Court on September 1 2023.

21 candidates, including 2 female aspirations, will battle for the seats.
