President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has said sports development in the country is part of human capital development strategy at the heart of Malawi 2063 vision.
Chakwera made these remarks during a Presidential Dinner hosted at Kamuzu Palace yesterday night, in honor of players participating in the Four Nations tournament.
“We are eager to host international sporting competitions like this Four Nations Tournament to strengthen our ties with other nations that we want to do business with for the growth of our economy,” he said.
The President also cited the development of sporting facilities such as the Griffin Saenda Complex, the National Aquatic Center, and various stadiums being constructed across the country as an indication of government’s determination in sports development.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire said the senior tournament will kick off on Saturday, as Malawi Flames will play against Kenya’s Harambee stars, and Zimbabwe Warriors will face Zambia’s Chipolopolo at Bingu National Stadium (BNS).
In his remarks, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President, Fleethood Haiya hailed the Malawi government through Ministry of Sports for allowing FAM to host the tournament.
Haiya said such gesture shows President Chakwera’s commitment in supporting sports development in the country. He also Commended First Capital Bank and Airtel Malawi for sponsoring the tournament.
The four teams are participating in the tournament in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
