Namwera Police in Mangochi have apprehended a 38 year old man for allegedly injuring 20-year-old suspected thief, Major Majid.
Spokesperson for Mangochi Police, Amina Tepani Daudi, has confirmed the development and identified the suspect s Abdullah Nandi following a shocking video of vigilante justice.
According to Tepani Daudi, Nandi, allegedly tied Majid to his Ford Courier motor vehicle and dragged him along the road after catching him stealing tomatoes from his garden.
“The horrifying incident happened on March 24 2024, at Mkambiri Village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in the district and was captured on a disturbing video clip that went viral on social media,” she said.
The footage revealed Nandi and his accomplices torturing Majid by dragging him behind the vehicle as a form of punishment.
“A prompt intervention by a team of detectives from Namwera Police led to the arrest Nandi,” said Daudi.
She said preliminary investigations indicate that Majid was subjected to “barbaric” treatment along an earth road, approximately 200 metres away, as he was being taken to Masuku Police Unit.
“However, fearing public detection upon reaching a junction near the tarmac road, the perpetrators untied Majid, leaving him battered and bruised,” said Daudi .
Majid, suffering from multiple injuries, has been rushed to Namwera Health Centre for urgent medical treatment.
“Nandi now faces grave charges under section 235 of the Penal Code for Acts Intended to Cause Grievous Harm. He will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Daudi.
In light of this disturbing incident, Mangochi Police Station urged people to “refrain from taking justice into their hands and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to prevent such egregious crimes from occurring”.
Both the suspect and victim come from Mkambiri Village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in Mangochi District.
