Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Councillor Misheck Mwaijengo has defected to the Malawi Congress Party, bringing along hundreds of his followers from Songwa ward in Karonga.
Mwaijengo cited the current government’s development projects in the area, including the construction of Mayoka CDSS, One Stop border post, and houses for security officers, as the primary reason for his defection.
The defection is seen as a significant boost for the MCP, with regional leaders expressing confidence in the party’s prospects in the upcoming general elections.
MCP Regional Chairperson Kezzie Msukwa emphasized the importance of integrating new members from the DPP into the party’s fold, aligning with their open-door policy.
The announcement was made at Iponga primary school, where Mwaijengo addressed his decision to switch allegiance, signaling a notable shift in the political landscape of Karonga district.
