President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has said that police officers play crucial role in the society and that their roles must not be underestimated.

Chakwera said this at at Limbe Police training school where he presided over the passing out parade of 1367 police constable recruits

The president said, police plays important roles of maintaining peace and  harmony of the society, protecting and serving the public, ensuring smooth traffic low, crowd control at events, crime prevention and  incarcerating the convicted of crimes; hence ,they need to be applauded for the good work they do.

He further said that at the time he was assuming power in 2020, they were few police officers which was a contributing factor to lawlessness that prevailed at the time

He then promised the Malawians that his administration will learn on servant leadership, he had to live up to such by ensuring the number of police officers are increased through more recruitments.

Meanwhile, the minister of Homeland security Ken Zikhale Ng’oma says the passing out of 1367 police constable recruits is a major milestone that needs to be commended.

“Ministry will continue to lobby for budgetary support for recruitment of more police officers”, Ng’oma said

The number of police officers have increased by 30 percent from 13, 500 to 19570.
