Consumers Association of Malawi has raised a concern to the Ministry of Water and Sanitation on claims that the Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has raised unannounced water tariffs.

Chief Executive Director for CAMA said he is seeking the Ministry’s intervention for the matter because water is a commodity that must not to be used to discriminate against people especially the poor.

Meanwhile, he said the unorganized water tariffs mainly affects poor people who are already facing economic challenges and that careless increase of tariffs have a trigger negative effect on prices of many goods and services on the Market.

“They need to balance the process to avoid hurting people who already have financial problems and above all, people are experiencing various health pandemics such as cholera and others” reads kapito’s letter.

BWB and Ministry are yet to comment on the matter.
