People from six villages in the area of senior Chief Mphuka earlier today have stormed Thyolo District Council to force the department of fisheries to pay their wages after they dug a dam some two months ago.
Msewa village headman, said they worked for 35 days in January in anticipation of receiving food and K2, 000 per day, but to date, the authorities have yet to pay them.
Yohane Chisoni, who is the Secretary for the dam project said the people from Mochedwa, Mwakala, Msewa, Nahemo,Mwanaphwa, and Mphama are expected to receive K90,000 each after working, including extra days, under the Sustainable Fisheries, Aquaculture Development, and Watershed Management Project.
After the meeting, Hudson Kuphanga, who is also the Thyolo district commissioner told their representatives in the officer that he has been assured by the project officials that the people will receive their money on Friday.
He advised them to come back next Monday for vigils should they get nothing from the fisheries officials in Lilongwe.
