Health workers across the country have threaten to take to the street this coming Thursday with an aim of forcing the Tonse Alliance government of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to effect an increment in their allowances.
This has been confirmed in a joint statement released by National Organisation of Nurses, Midwives of Malawi (Nonm) and Physicians Assistants Union of Malawi (Paun) made available to this publication.
This follows an emergency meeting the two unions had on 26 April, 2024 to map the way forward after failure by the Ministry of Health through Secretary for Health to provide them feedback to their conciliation agreement.
According to the statement, Nonm and Paum convened an emergency meeting on Friday where the resolution to conduct the demonstration was mapped out.
“After a thorough discussion and legal consultation with full exhaustion of all due processes, NONM and PAUM have resolved to the following;
“To conduct peaceful demonstrations in all cities and districts across the country on 2nd May, 2024 from 9am.
“To deliver petitions to all city and district councils of Malawi requesting an immediate action and effecting of our conciliation agreements by Government through Ministry of Health,” reads part of the statement.
