As the whole World celebrates World Press Freedom Day, State Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima who is also President of United Transformation Movement (UTM) has taken to social media to wish all journalists in the country well.
Writing on his official facebook page Chilima said the country recognizes the vital role a free press plays in shaping people’s understanding of the world and holding those in power accountable.
“As Thomas Jefferson once said, “The only security of all is in a free press” – today 3rd May, on World Press Freedom Day, we honour the dedication and courage of Malawian journalists and their counterparts across the globe who work tirelessly to secure the truth.
“We recognize the vital role a free press plays in shaping our understanding of the world and holding those in power accountable,” wrote Chilima.
He added: “We pay tribute to your unwavering commitment to seeking the truth and justice. You are the guardians of our democracy. And your theme this year – Guardians of Democracy: Championing Media Independence for Credible Elections – speaks it all.”
The global theme for this year is ‘๐ผ ๐๐ง๐๐จ๐จ ๐๐ค๐ง ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ฃ๐๐ฉ: ๐ ๐ค๐ช๐ง๐ฃ๐๐ก๐๐จ๐ข ๐๐ฃ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ค๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ซ๐๐ง๐ค๐ฃ๐ข๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐ก ๐พ๐ง๐๐จ๐๐จ’, while locally World Press Freedom Day will be celebrated under the theme; ‘๐๐ช๐๐ง๐๐๐๐ฃ๐จ ๐ค๐ ๐ฟ๐๐ข๐ค๐๐ง๐๐๐ฎ: ๐พ๐๐๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ค๐ฃ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ฃ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ฃ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ ๐๐ค๐ง ๐พ๐ง๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ก๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ๐จ’.
