Some people in Zomba district have discovered started digging ‘gold’ in Thondwe River in the area of Group Village Phulanya, Traditional Authority Chikowi.
It is reported that unknown people are hiring locals for the job, reportedly paying them K2,000 per day.
This comes barely days after police in the district confiscated equipment some people were using in illegal gold mining in the area of Traditional Authority M’biza in the district.
Group Village Head Phulanya fears if the practice is not condemned, it will lead to siltation of the river and Lake Chilwa.
Regional (South) Mining Engineer Malumbo Mpasa says the country is losing lots of money through unlicensed miners.
Meanwhile, Zomba Police Community Policing Coordinator Nyson Chibondo has warned that law enforcers will soon confiscate the equipment and effect arrests on the illegal miners.
