Some local contractors trading under the banner ‘Concerned Indigenous Contractors’ have given the Roads Fund Administration a 7 days ultimatum to pay them MK14 billion kwacha the state-owned company is owing them.

This is contrary to earlier reports claiming that the demonstrations have been shifted to Thursday, May 23, 2024.

Speaking after presenting the petition, the group’s representative Stanley Gwaza said they have not received any payment since January this year which has affected their livelihood such as facing possible evictions from rented offices and closure of businesses due to failure to pay debts.

Public Relations Manager for Roads Fund Administration Masauko Ngwaluko has admitted to not paying the contractors since January but attributes it to the challenges in revenue collection and says the petition will be forwarded to their principals.

He said they rely on fuel levies from the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority MERA to pay the contractors which they haven’t received since January and has accumulated to 106 billion kwacha.
