To reduce road accidents involving motorcycles, police at Jenda in Mzimba have seized 27 motorcycles for contravening the Road Traffic Act (RTA).

Police officers in the district on Wednesday conducted an operation to apprehend motorcycles in violation of road traffic regulations.

According to Macfarlen Mseteka, the Public Relations Officer for Jenda Police, seizure and apprehension are among the strategies implemented by Jenda Police to curb preventable road accidents, in addition to awareness campaigns.

“Some of the offenses include riding without helmets, over-speeding, riding without licenses, using unregistered motorcycles, uninsured motorcycles, and carrying more than one passenger,” said Msteteka.

He further said the motorcycles will be returned to their owners upon payment of fines and demonstrated commitment to follow stipulated recommendations such as buying helmets, registering the motorcycles, and obtaining insurance.
