Residents of Liwonde Township in Machinga are living in dangerous conditions due to rampant sewer spillages, raising fears of water contamination and an outbreak of waterborne diseases.

According to the residents, the sewer pipes, have been emitting a bad odour and causing panic among them.

Joyce Phiri, one of the resident said that although they have seen people from the district council inspecting the sites where the spillages are several times, nothing has changed.

Liwonde Station Market has a broken sewer line which is leaking very close to where peope are selling food.

One of the tomato sellers at Liwonde station market said, their lives are in danger, but there is nothing they can do. They have reported this to the authorities several times but they ignored them.

Meanwhile, council authorities have declined to comment on the matter.
