The Malawi Police Service has arrested human rights activist Edward Kambanje on allegations of forgery.

According to National Police Spokesperson Peter Kalaya, Kambanje was apprehended in Blantyre and is currently being held in Lilongwe.

The arrest follows a complaint that Kambanje had forged names and signatures in an issued statement.

One of the signatories of the letter, Queen Kapalamula, claimed she was not consulted and did not authorize her signature on the letter.

Kambanje, who leads the Concerned Citizens of Malawi, recently called the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to among others investigate into the rapid wealth accumulation of Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda’s daughter, Regina.

The activist is expected to be taken to court soon after the police finalize their investigations.
