The Malawi Police Service has arrested Kambanje on allegations of forgery, with National Police Spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirming his detention in Lilongwe.

The arrest follows a complaint that Kambanje had forged names and signatures in an issued statement, including that of Queen Kapalamula, who claimed she was not consulted.

Economic Freedom Movement Commander in Chief Joseph Peshi described the arrest as a move to silence government critics and demanded Kambanje’s immediate release.

Kambanje, who leads the Concerned Citizens of Malawi, had recently called for an investigation into the rapid wealth accumulation of Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda’s daughter, Regina.
