Police in Lumbadzi have on Monday arrested two chiefs and their six subordinates over chieftaincy wrangles in the area of senior group village headman Chigonthi which is under Senior Chief Chitukula in Lilongwe.
Lumbadzi Police Station Public Relations Officer Sergeant Felix Kwinyani said the incident took place on May 31,2024 at Kalambulika village in the area of Senior chief Chitukula.
They have been identified as; Abeyele Mwase (Senior group village headman Chigonthi), Phinifolo Batiyele (Village headman Nkhosa), James Batiyere, Green Michael, Zembeni Patson, Naman Nelson, Kaluzi Dickson and Elisa Chirwa all from group village headman Chigonthi.
They have since been charged with offences ranging from malicious damage, arson and theft.
It is reported that the eight maliciously damaged 12 houses, set ablaze six houses, stole bags of maize, pigs, goats and other livestock, unspecified amount of money and other items.
The suspects appeared before the Mkukula Senior Resident Magistrate court yesterday and have been remanded at Maula prison pending further hearing.
Enquiries are still under way to arrest other suspects who are at large and to recover the stolen items.
Meanwhile, Police in Lumbadzi strongly advise members of the community to refrain from taking laws into own hands, once found, they will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
