The leader of the country, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, has refused to sign a bill passed by the parliament a few months ago regarding the approval of cannabis cultivation in the country as part of the regulated cannabis sector, the Cannabis Regulatory Amendment.

Through a letter released by the government, the leader did not sign this bill because various concerned groups have given differing opinions on the consequences of approving this law.

At present, Chakwera has stated that there is a need for a procedure to gather the opinions of citizens and to educate Malawians on what the law entails.

Apart from not signing the Cannabis law, the country’s leader has signed the law concerning the elderly, the law concerning the energy sector, and other bills where the Malawi government is borrowing funds to help develop water projects from Lake Malawi.
