The new Chairperson and Commissioners of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) have been sworn in with a call to advance democracy and benefit Malawians.

Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, Rev. Phillip P.J. Kambulire, and Dr. Limbikani Kamlongera took their oaths of office today at the Lilongwe High Court.

Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda urged the new MEC team to remain independent and impartial.

He emphasized the importance of avoiding serving the interests of a small group and adhering to the laws governing the electoral commission.

The new MEC Chair Justice Mtalimanja has replaced Justice Chifundo Kachale, whose tenure has expired.

Kachale oversaw the 2019 election re-run, which was overturned by the court following massive irregularities. Kachale was appointed by the former leader Arthur Peter Mutharika.
