At least 16 people have reported dead following the incident happened at Aricell Plant, about 45km South of the Capital Seoul in South Korea

According to Local Fire Official Kim Jin-Young, the fire began when the series of battery cells exploded though it remains unclear what caused the initial explosions

He added that there were 100 workers inside the premises at the time and it was difficult to enter the site initially due to fears of additional explosions

Meanwhile, Hwaseong’s Medical Authority, Sim Jung-Sik confirmed the death of 16 people while Seven others were injured

The Aricell factory accommodated over 35,000 battery cells on its second floor, where the batteries were inspected and packaged, with more stored elsewhere.

South Korea is a leading producer of lithium batteries, which are used in many items from electric vehicles to laptops.
