The Mzuzu City Council (MCC) has started recieving  nominations for tomorrow’s polls to elect a mayor and deputy mayor.

Spokesperson for the Council, McDonald Gondwe has confirmed that they have received three nominations from different parties, and the nomination process will close at 1pm today, Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

Gondwe stated, “We have received a nomination for councillor Kondwani Nyasulu of UTM for mayor. Additionally, councillor Monica Simwaka of the Malawi Congress Party has been nominated for deputy mayor, along with the incumbent deputy mayor Tony Mwenitete.”

The elections will take place on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 9am in the council chamber.

This follows the lifting of a High Court order which had previously prevented city and municipal councils from holding elections for mayors and deputy mayors pending a judicial review.

The elections, is happening after Zomba elected Christopher Jana from Democratic Progressive Party as a new city mayor and Esther Sagawa, for the Malawi Congress Party elected as Lilongwe city mayor on today 25 June 2024.
