President Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday attended the burial ceremony of late Reverend Dr. Killion Mgawi at Nkhoma CCAP ground in the area of senior chief Mazengera in Lilongwe.

Chakwera was accompanied by first lady madam Monica Chakwera, speaker of parliament Catherine Gotani Hara and some cabinet ministers.

Speaking on behalf of the President Chakwera, Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs Kingsley Sulamoyo said the president is saddened by the death of Dr. Killion Mgawi who happened to be his spiritual father.

He said the president was mentored by the late Mgawi the time he started his journey as a pastor.

“The time the President came at Nkhoma Theological College; he was welcomed by Mgawi who mentored him through his journey of being a pastor under CCAP Nkhoma synod. While there, he was given a house next to the late Mgawi ‘ s house which cemented their relationship of a father and son,” Sulemayo said.

He said Chakwera attended the burial ceremony of late Mgawi while still mourning the death of late Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others who died in a plane crash in Mzimba which shows how much he loved his spiritual father.

He urged the people to emulate the life of late Mgawi who was God fearing, kind and loving.

In her eulogy, daughter to late Mgawi, Professor Address Malata described her late father as a God fearing man and great worshipper.

She said her father was such a nice man, a great giver who loved and supported people in many aspects.

“My siblings and l could not have asked for a better dad. He was the best. We admired him and will still admire him. Dad touched so many lives and we will still remember him,” Malata said.

Malata said her father said goodbye to them last year, and gave each of them his blessings.

Late Reverend Dr. Killion Mgawi who is survived by a wife and five children, was born at Nkhoma Mission in Lilongwe on 21st January, 1931 and was the first Malawian General Secretary for Nkhoma synod from 1963 to 1968.
