He has been identified as Chisomo Samson who hailed from Mbonekera Village in the Sub-Tradional Authority Mbonekera in Dowa District.
According to Public Relations Officer for Mponela Police Station Sergeant Macpatson Msadala said the incident happened on 27th June 2024 at Chikuluti 1 Village near Mponela Trading Centre.
Msadala said her mother woke up in the morning left the deceased on the bed dressed with plastic paper to avoid urine leakage. When she went to check on the baby, she found it in unconscious condition due to the plastic which covered his face.He later pronounced dead by elders before reported to Mponela Police Station.
Police Officers from Mponela Police Station together with medical officers from Mponela Rural Hospital visited the scene and confirmed the death was due to suffocation.
The Police therefore have advised guardians and caregivers to keep plastic papers and wrapping materials out of reach of children.
