The Lusaka Subordinate Court has convicted former Chilanga Town Council Secretary Mumbi Mubanga Chocho for the corrupt acquisition of property and sentenced her to 12 months simple imprisonment.

In presiding over the matter, Sakwanda found that the Prosecution had proved their case beyond all reasonable doubt and convicted the accused persons charged and sentenced her to 12 months simple imprisonment.

The sentence is with effect from 27th June 2024.

In addition, Magistrate Sakwanda has also entered Statutory Judgment against the convict in the sum of K3,300.00.

Mumbi Mubanga Chocho was in February 2023, arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission and charged with one (1) count of corrupt acquisition of Property contrary to Sections34(1)(b) and 41 of the Anti-Corruption Act No. 3 of 2012.

It was alleged that Mumbi Mubanga Chocho, on 27th January 2020 in Chilanga, being a The Public Officer, namely Council Secretary for Chilanga Town Council, did fraudulently divert to her property in the Chalala area for her personal use, 20,060 kilograms of crushed stones valued at K3,300.00, the property of Chilanga Town Council.

The stones were intended for maintenance of Chilanga Civic Centre, an act which was prejudicial to the interest of the government of the Republic of Zambia.

The suspect has since been remanded to prison to commence serving the sentence.
