Police in Namwera, Mangochi over the weekend arrested two men accused of breaking into two houses in different villages and went away with two Rifo motorcycles and K550,000 in cash on the night of June 24, 2024.
The incidents occurred in Kane and Mikundi villages, under Traditional Authority Bwananyambi.
The suspects, identified as Shukrani Yakiti, 21, and Alick Likoja, 28, were part of a group that included seven accomplices from Mozambique. Armed with panga knives and large sticks, the group reportedly broke into Mr. Actor Shaibu’s house in Mikundi village while he was asleep. They demanded money from the victim, which he had earned from tobacco sales, and after a thorough search, took K550,000 in cash.
During their escape, Mr. Shaibu shouted for help and two neighbors rushed to assist but were met by the criminals who assaulted them severely, sustaining head injuries and both were treated as outpatients at Mulibwanji Mission Hospital.
On the same night, the gang attacked Mr. Afiki Mkwanda’s house in Kane village. They brutally assaulted him and his sister before fleeing with two Rifo motorcycles valued at K2.5 million.
The arrested duo confessed that their accomplices were from Mozambique and had been hired by the second suspect specifically for these robberies.
Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and recover the stolen property. The two arrested men will face robbery charges in court once the investigation is complete.
Yakiti is from Namininga village, while Likoja hails from Mikundi village, both under Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in Mangochi.
