Between January and June this year, the Pesticides Control Board, in partnership with the Malawi Police Service, arrested 40 individuals suspected of illegally selling pesticides without a license.
Lesten Banda, the principal monitoring and enforcement officer, stated that these suspects were distributing hazardous and toxic pesticides known to cause both short and long-term health issues, including cancer and diabetes.
Banda reported that over 2,000 kilograms of pesticides have been seized, and the authorities are now running awareness campaigns on safe pesticide handling.
All suspects are expected to appear before court.
