A Couple, Finiyasi Alex 21, and Jacklean Mustafa,17, have hanged themselves consecutively.
Confirming the incident to Malawi News Agency (Mana) Sunday, Salima Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sub-Inspector, Rabecca Ndiwate said the incident occurred on Friday, July 5, 2024, at Chiwoko Village, Senior Chief Kalonga.
She said it was reported that the two were married and they had some religious differences.
According to the suicide note, left by the husband, upon discovering that the wife was dead, he decided to hang himself as well for fear of being accused by his wife’s relatives.
“It appeared that the relatives of the wife were not happy seeing their relation marrying a person of different religious affiliation,” Ndiwate said.
She said it was due to this reason that the husband decided to end the marriage and this did not go well with the wife, who was found hanging inside the bedroom.
Postmortem conducted by Salima District Hospital revealed death was due to suffocation secondary to strangulation.
Alex hailed from Chiwoko Village while Mustafa hailed from Lingison Village within the area of Senior Chief Kalonga in Salima.
